A Little Detective Work Brings in Big Savings

WSSC Program Benefits Jubilee Community

A little detective work by Jubilee’s Custodial Bookkeeper Mildred (Milly) Ayarza resulted in big savings for the organization and people we support. Milly helps pay the bills at Jubilee, and she scheduled a meeting with local water company WSSC to investigate high water bills at homes where people Jubilee supports live.

“The meeting was very productive, and the WSSC official mentioned that they have a program for non-profits that helps reduce water bills,” said Milly. “I immediately got excited because I knew this could translate into real savings for some people we support on fixed incomes, and for Jubilee as we pay for a portion of utilities at homes with live-in direct support staff.”

Once back at the office, Milly began the lengthy process of applying for the benefit, which provides 100 free gallons of water per day per eligible client.

“At one of our group homes, my records show they use up to 123 gallons of water a day per person at the house. Now 100 gallons of that water will be covered by WSSC, so this is a major savings on the water bill,” said Milly.

The program just began this Spring, and we are already seeing the impact in significantly reduced water bills at 18 homes of people Jubilee supports.  In the first billing quarter, the combined savings total more than $16,000.

“Thank you, WSSC, for your generosity. And thank you Milly for your initiative and innovation,” said Jubilee Executive Director Steve Keener. “This is a great example of how our office staff who work behind the scenes make a real difference for the people we serve.”
