Mary Jo’s Housing Crisis and How You Helped Resolve It

Thank you for Supporting Jubilee in Your Year-End Giving

No Longer a “Nervous Wreck”
As told by Mary Jo Wybierala

It was hard on me when Ben got sick. We’ve been friends for more than forty years, and housemates since his mom died and he was lonely. I worried about him a lot. I was relieved when he got better. When he decided to move closer to his sister, I was glad for him. I was ready for a change too, and I needed to look out for me.

When it was time for Ben’s house to be sold, I was still on a waiting list for a housing voucher. I had to move, but I didn’t know where I was going to go.

Jubilee found space in one of their homes for me to stay for a while. I had things in boxes and had to go through all my stuff. I had no idea how long it would be.

Looking for apartments was hard as hell. I was a nervous wreck. I wasn’t sure who would live with me, or when my furniture would come. I wasn’t sure how it would work out.

Without Jubilee, I would have been stranded. My direct support professional, Jessica, was a lifesaver! She and my housing specialist, Ashley, helped me tour apartments and homes. When Ashley said my voucher had been approved, I said, Yippee! Two thumbs up!

I signed my own lease for the very first time in my life.

Jubilee helped me move to my new apartment. It’s the best place I’ve ever lived.

Everything is running smoothly now. My sister gave me a recliner as a housewarming gift. I like to sit in my recliner and crochet, read, and do word finds. And I still have dinner every Tuesday with Jubilee friends and play Bingo at the senior center.

Jessica has noticed that now that I’m in my own place, I have more independence and am happier.

Thank you for championing Jubilee with your year-end donation! Your support means Jubilee can fill the gap for Mary Jo and others like her when emergencies arise.
