Embracing the Dignity of Risk

As Shared by Jubilee Program Manager Egoyibo “Stella” Onyenkwere

Jordan Gould’s life in Maryland is full, he’s busy with activities and people who care about him. But there was a hole in his life. His father lives all the way in Sweden, and they had not seen each other in five years.

Jordan’s dad reached out to Jubilee to see if we could help arrange a visit. The first step was determining if Jordan wanted to go to Sweden. Jubilee held a life goals meeting with Jordan, and visiting dad was at the top of his list.

Turning this goal into reality required an embrace of concepts like the dignity of risk. This means Jordan has the right to take reasonable risks for his self-determination and dignity. Jordan deserves to realize his dreams, even if it’s a little scary for all of us who love him to let go.

Making the trip happen also required a lot of logistics work from Jordan’s team. His direct support professionals, especially Omorinsola Turner, worked tirelessly with Jordan to make his dream come true.  From applying for a passport, to packing, coordinating with the family and a friend traveling with Jordan, to emotionally preparing for the reunion, our team went above and beyond.

Seeing photos of Jordan’s reunion with his father made all the preparation worthwhile. Jordan shared that he was so happy after reuniting with his dad, and looks forward to making it an annual occasion.
