How Jubilee’s Housing Team Helps 14 People at Main Street Apartments

A home of their own is the dream for the 212 people who now turn to Jubilee’s Housing Support Services for assistance. Our six-person housing team works one-on-one with their clients to make it a reality.

“Each person helped by our housing team has unique needs, and we work closely with them and their families to make a housing match that lasts,” said Francess Issa, Jubilee’s Senior Housing Support Manager. “To make living on your own affordable, our team applies for government housing vouchers. We also identify and apply for benefits that reduce utility and grocery costs.”

The Jubilee housing team stays involved after people get the keys to their own place. From making sure bills are paid on time to training on how to interact with housemates and neighbors, our housing team goes the distance.

Recently, Housing Support Specialist Amanda Gibson stopped by the Main Street apartment building in Rockville to visit three people she helped get an apartment. Main Street’s inclusive vision and amenities make it a desirable place to live, and the waiting list for an apartment is long.

“It’s amazing! After five years on the wait list I finally got my own place thanks to Jubilee’s help,” said Sizhe Xie. “I feel like an adult on my own after living with my parents.”

Sizhe now shares a three-bedroom apartment with Michael Kelly and Shazmin Moriani. Amanda works closely with Main Street’s management to stay on top of openings and make sure the 14 people we support there are thriving. She saw there was a three-bedroom apartment available, and made quick connections to help Jubilee housing clients.

“It’s a blessing living with these guys,” said Michael. “They’re cool and respectful of who I am,” said Michael. “Amanda’s helped me a lot, and it’s not just getting the apartment. Before I used to rely on Instacart for my groceries, but that’s expensive. She worked with me to create a food budget, and getting comfortable shopping for myself. Now I go on my own. I even picked up some snacks to share with the guys.”

“Living at Main Street is a blast,” said Shazmin. “Amanda’s help has been so great. I want to be independent, and I feel like I’ve gotten better at speaking up for myself since moving here.”
