Christina is a busy woman. Between her job, weekly dinners with friends, and family time, Christina is on the go. But one area of her life remained stubbornly status quo. Every night, Christina went to bed in her childhood bedroom in the house she grew up in.
Now 36, Christina wanted her own place. Her autism qualified her for a government housing voucher that would help make living on her own affordable. “I was on the waitlist for a housing voucher for six years,” said Christina. “I started to think it wasn’t going to happen. Once it finally came through, we had to figure out the next step fast.”
Enter Jubilee’s Housing Support Services. With a voucher from the Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) secured, Christina and her parents went looking for help. They only had 90 days to act or they would lose the housing voucher.
Jubilee’s housing team sprang into action. They helped Christina and her family apply for housing support services and explained how the voucher works. Jubilee also helped find affordable apartments that met the voucher’s criteria—and Christina’s wish list.
“I wanted an apartment close to work and my family, and that also had amenities like a gym and a pool,” said Christina.
On New Years Day, Christina began her new chapter. She moved into her own place with the ongoing support of Jubilee’s housing team. They help her with budgeting, applying for additional benefits, and overall being a successful tenant.
“At first I was nervous because I haven’t lived on my own before,” said Christina. “But now that I’m here it feels great.”
Christina goes to the gym at the apartment complex and just started a water exercise class now that summer is here. “I decide how to spend my time after work. Some days I choose just to relax in my apartment. I’m looking forward to meeting new people here through the exercise classes.”
